Housey Doingz

Many find that the late 90s UK tech-house scene takes of a lot of picking through. The musical terrain is littered with an awful lot of throw away material which just sounds dated when placed in today's context. 'Housey Doingz' was a production collective which involved Nathan Coles and Terry Francis, the founders of the aclaimed label and clubnight 'Wiggle,' and the releases below are an indicator of the kind of jewels which are up for grabs with a little of digging. Gobstopper lays rooted in 80s electro whilst Fonki and Curly Wurly nod to a murky acid sound, but both still cater to and ooze a UK dancefloor sensibility.

Latina Cafe - Power to Conquer (Yoruba Soul)(2000)

Jazzy stomper from the early days of Yoruba Soul, another Osunlade alias it seems. Hypnotic groove with some beautiful chord arrangements. Would love to know a bit more information about this powerful vocal if anyone recognises it.

Selections: Discfunction Records

Surveying the gamut of labels spawned by Conrand McDonnell and Dan Tyler, aka the Idjut Boys, Discfunction seems to emerge as their criminally overlooked lovechild. The label is frequently neglected in interviews and when it does crop up journalists aren't really quite sure if it was even their label. Discogs only dares provide a tentative 'possibly operated by' attribution. Quite why the duo appear so distant from the label is unclear, but it's an unjust oversight given the quality of the label's disco orientated fare. Here are five choice cuts from their early years which demonstrate a trademark disco-grounded sound that borrows a heavy emphasis on organic percussion from dub and jazz. It's worth noting that while the price of some of these gems on wax spirals beyond £50 a bunch of these tracks can be found on the label's first compilation

Rhythm Doctor - Esoteric Chakra (A Head Arse Fusion Band Mix) (DIS 002) (1997)

Idjut Boys remix alias.

Maurice Fulton - Revenge of the Orange (DIS 011) (1999)

Great Samba infused track which works equally well as a DJ tool.

Erot - Song For Annie #2 (DIS 010) (1999)

Amazing cut from Tore Andreas "Erot" Kroknes who unfortunately passed away in 2003 aged 23, a real secret weapon.

Crue- L Grand Orchestra Got To Be Real (Northern Birth Takiimix) (DIS003) (1997)

East West Acid Test - Roughness (?? Mix) (DIS005) (1997)
